FATBOB's RALLY REVIEW :
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN AMAZING RALLY
Friday :
It's finally time for another party at Faunsdale... or so I thought.
I get on my bike & ride for 5 hours through beautifull little northern Alabama
backroads. The sun is shining, the road is all twisty & curvy, the trees are
green and I just know it's gonna be a great weekend.
When I finally get there late Friday afternoon everything's shaping up to be a
real fine rally. Tons of people have already arrived with more comming in by
the minute. Lot's of old friends from past rallies, it's good to see everybody
again. At Faunsdale the party doesn't really get going until SATURDAY night,
during & especially AFTER the wet t-shirt contest so we're just kicking back
& chillin' out, and generally having a good time.
The band had a hard time getting started because of electrical problems...
but who cares? I mean what the hell, it's a biker rally hosted in
a COW PASTURE! Don't worry, be happy. Chill out with your friends and have
another beer! After a 20 minutes or so of foolin' around with wire & breakers & stuff
they finally get all the electrical sorted out & band starts cranking out some tunes.
Some of the good 'ol boys even threw together their own little impromptu wet
t-shirt contest in the back of the campground, just for something to do.
Fun fun fun, life is good, bikes are good, the rally is good... it's ALL good
and It's shaping up to be one great weekend.
Saturday :
I crawl out of my tent at about... ??? O'clock. I dunno WHAT time it was... left my
watch in my saddlebags. So I get up when the temperature hit's about 75' degrees &
my tent turns into a Sauna. Mumble mumble, scratch scratch. Stagger accross the cow
field, skirt the cow pond, hobble around the porta potty & finally make it to the coffee.
After 7-8 cups the place starts to come alive. Or maybe my brain cells just start
firing again? Dunno. Anyways the DJ gets up & puts on some tunes, people stagger in
& grab a bite to eat... and it's after 11 am by the time the morning poker run get's
out the front gate. So many people are still coming IN to the rally that the entire road is
blocked by bikes and it takes about half an hour to clear room for the OUTGOING poker
run. Wow. About 100 bikes line up & go for an 30 odd mile poker run. People are still
crawling out of bed.
In the afternoon they had the biker games. Slow race, barrell roll, weenie bite, balloon
toss, ball drop... you know the drill. Pretty good, lot'sa people come & line the
field to watch the games. The most popular one seemed to be the strong man contest
were guys tossed an empty beer keg over a beam they kept cranking up higher & higher.
Hearing the crowd cheer that one was like being at a ball game when the local team hit's a homer.
A bike show, tatoo contests and of course lot's of babes and a bit of flashing make this
a great afternoon. And the weather... couldn't ask for better.
As the sun went down the field events came to an end, and another band cranks up & people
start hanging out near the stage.
Here it comes folks... only 4 more hours till the wet t-shirt contest at 11pm. Only 3 more
hours, start getting ready. Warning ! Only 2 more hours... 1 more... 30 minutes until we start.
Finally, it's time! Are the girls ready? YES ! Is the Crowd ready? I turn around look behind
me... and see people packed around the stage like sardines in a can. You bet they're ready !
Let's rock this place !
All of the sudden there's some kind of delay... we wait around for 20 mins or so... nobody
knows why we're waiting. The DJ comes on the PA & says how this is going to be an amazing
contest, and jokes about he's probably going to get arrested. Finally the contest starts !
The girls start coming up on stage one by one and are introduced to the crowd. Of course things
immediately start getting a little wild... and suddenly after only a few girls being
brought out the party stops. What? Dunno. Wait some more.
Then some guy picks up the mike & tells everyone that the DJ & one of the girls just got
arrested for being disorderly or something... and that they can't continue the contest!
Ah man, this really sucks ! And I thought the DJ was making a joke when he said he was going
to get arrested for trying to have a wet t-shirt contest! Hum. Guess he was serious?!!?
Right now your probably thinking what I'm thinking. All these bikers, all this
anticipation... Uh ohhh... now the shit's really gonna hit the fan! Right? I turn around
to face the crowd behind me expecting to have to dodge flying beer bottles & enraged bikers
charging the stage... and see... comon... take a wild guess...
I see everybody just going ''oh well, serves them right''. And then everyone just packs up &
starts leaving ! What the hell!?! I'm thinking maybe there's a SWAT team or something
parked behind the stage where I can't see them? I go look. Nope, nothing there but piles
of empty beer bottles whistling in the wind. Maybe the National Guard is hiding behind that
porta potty over there? I go look. Nope, no National Guard here either. What is going on?
I go back to the stage. A collection is taken up to raise the bail money for the DJ & the
girl that just got hauled off. A few people (real bikers I assume) chip in. One guy throws
in $50. God bless him. We find somebody still sober (it wasn't easy) to drive 10 miles
to the county jail & go bail our friends out.
By this time the field in front of the stage is so empty it could have been used to film
a western. Ya know, galoping horses, tumbleweeds & such like. It was amazing.
I've been in buildings that didn't empty out half as fast when the fire alarm went off.
The sober guy that drove the jail gets back. Local law says our friends are spending the
night in lockup. Come back tomorow morning & pick them up. Damn, this really blows.
I go wander around the campground looking for the party. Mabye here? Nope. Maybe there?
nope. Maybe way, way over there in the very back? Nope, not even way back there. I did
however recieve a few friendly warnings that ''I had better be carefull'' or might get arrested
also. For what? Taking crooked pictures? Stumbling around in the dark? Maybe for tripping
over that guy's tent cord? (ah... sorry about that). Whatever. I diligently keep looking for
somebody having a good time, somewhere. It's only about 1 AM... surely everybody hasn't
gone to bed yet?
I hear some whoopin'. I follow the sounds of merriment, and finally come accross the gang
from the Styx River Rally not only still awake, but actually having a good time all by
themselves. At least the night wasn't a total waste.
Sunday :
By the time my watch says ''75 degrees'' & I crawl out of my tent half of the people
have already left. I crawl over to the vendor serving coffee, and by the time my
brain is in working order Faunsdale is pratically deserted. I stick around until noon
or so when the DJ & the girl finally get released and talk to them. The trail date
is set for August something. This really sucks.
During the 5 hour drive home I start thinking about what I should write about this rally.
I've been here before & had a great time, even in the pouring rain ( see Faunsdale Fall 2001 )
All in all, about 5,000+ people showed up for this one, and it was a great rally until
the law broke up the wet t-shirt contest & killed the tail end of it.
Most of the rallies that I go to wish that they were half as good as this one, even if we
didn't get to have a wet t-shirt contest & whoop'ass party to crown it all off.
I just know there's going to be a bunch of rumors flying around concerning the future
of this rally, so let me just set one thing straight right now. I did speak to Bob
(the guy behind it all and who owns the land) before I left, and he told me that this
is most definately NOT going to kill the Faunsdale biker rally. For those of you that
have been to previous Faunsdale rallies you know there's been the occasional difference
with the local constabulary and yet the rally still keeps coming back year after year,
better than ever.
It takes more than a local sherrif sitting on something uncomfortable to ruin a good
biker rally.
As they've done in the past, whatever need fixin' will get fixed and I'm confident that
the Faunsdale Fall 2002 rally will be better than ever.
