FATBOB's biker rally review

Mayport Bikefest Mayport, FL May 9-11th, 2003 Should have been a great party. These guys contacted me a few months ago and asked what makes a great biker rally. You serious? Easy! I told them sell beer, have lots of crazy naked contests with prize money and trophies... some good bands and your good to go. Simple as 1-2-3. Or so we thought. What actually happened was a bunch of last minute snafu's. The city was all cool with having a biker rally, and then a couple of days before the event got all upset that there was going to be a... guess what? Pickle sucking contest! Oh my gawd, mothers hide your daughters there's going to be a pickle sucking contest! So then suddenly they're not allowed to sell beer at the rally anymore... no worries, a cool guy that owns the local marina next door told the rally organisers he would move some boats off an adjacent parking lot and they could sell beer there (on HIS private property). Thanks a million bud, it's nice to know that some people will chip in & help out when the need arises. Then the local cops all of the sudden like realized that there was going to be a bit of nudity. Oh oh, we can't be having that now can we? So we get about 4-5 dozen cops all hanging around the rally, just to make sure that nobody accidently slips up & exposes a titty or two. Or maybe it was in case all them rowdy bikers decided to have a giant brawl. Whatever. What we ended up with is about 50 cops all standing around all sweaty and bored wondering what they were supposed to be doing there. Come on... what did you expect? A riot? Bikers are cool and just want to have a good time on the weekends. I mean seriously... it ain't right to give the event a stamp of approval and then go switching stuff around at the last minute. Then again, I'm sure the cops were stuck between some do gooder and the rally organizers. I'd be willing to bet it wasn't the cops idea to try and ruin a rally. Oh well... enough bitchin'. A couple of thousand people showed up for the event which is pretty damn good for a first time rally. They had ton's of contests, including wet t-shirt contest, pickle sucking, hariest biker, most bodacious boobs and several more, with cash prizes for all. There was even a beauty pageant with a $1,000 first prize ! Two rockin' bands were also booked for the weekend (the DAWN BARHAM band and the STONEY CURTIS GROUP). The rally organizers did everything right, but the city did everything wrong. If the rally would have gone off as planned it would have been a rockin' weekend and well worth the trip. As it was, it's a rally that has a lot of potential... if the locals would stop sucking their thumbs and worrying over things they know nothing about. After all, it's not like bikers go and trash Daytona every year.
