Daytona BikeToberfest at the BROKEN SPOKE SALOON Daytona, FL Oct. 17-19th, 2003 The Broken Spoke was cool. Daytona was a little dissapointing as always. I really don't know what I expected. Ever since I was a teenie toddler and I first managed to ride without training wheels I've heard about the biker bars in Daytona. Some of these bars have gone on to become legends of their own, and right at the top of the list is the world famous Broken Spoke Saloon. So for this year's Daytona biketoberfest coverage I decided to head over there & check out all the wild action. Fun it was... wild it was NOT. Now before anybody reads any further let me make one thing clear. I had a good time this weekend at over at the Spoke. The staff were all real friendly, the place was way cool and they had everything setup just right. I met some good people, there were tons of babes and I seen some awesome scooters. The problem is with the City of Daytona and the type of crowds that show up (more below) Like I said, the Broken Spoke Saloon itself is cool. Easy access, it's just south of 1A1 and I95, and I found a very reasonable (only $11 per night!) place called the ''half moon campground'' about 5 miles north. And the location is only a few miles up the road from a bunch of other real famous places so it's easy to hop on your bike and go check out the rest of the... ahem... ''action'' happening at Daytona. The first thing you notice when you pull in is a bunch of huge shady oak trees that cover the grounds. There's enough parking right at the Spoke for about 800 bikes or so, with overflow parking lots all around it. Always a consideration at Daytona. They have a big roof in the back, with a stage for the bands and the contests.. strategically placed bars all over the place ensure that thirsty bikers never have to walk (stumble?) very far for that next beer, and of course the babes they got working as bartenders don't hurt a bit either. When you look a little closer you'll see their signature : vintage bikes that any real biker would kill for just hanging suspended from the giant oak trees. All in all a very nice setup. This year they also had a mechanical bull, and the famous biker babe CLEOPATRA posing with bikers. They had a naked biker dude contest on Friday night, and a Best Titties contest late Saturday night. The first thing I thought when I walked in is ''man this place is really gonna kick '' . And it should have. The problem with Daytona is... the same old problems with Daytona. The city doesn't like or encourage nudity and keeps a tight lid on even though a little titty does manage to pop out here and there. The cops outnumbered the bikers and just love to give out tickets, and an awefull lot of the people that go to Daytona are there cuz they hoping that they're gonna be featured on the upcomming Discovery Channel bikeweek documentary. It's so bad that at one point I was crossing the street and I heard some girls right behind me twittering about how scared they were, and that they'd better not stick around HERE cuz some of the big bad bikers were wearing patches and everybody knows that the only way you can get a patch is to be in a biker gang, and the only way you can get into a biker gang is to kill, maim people or sell guns and drugs... or maybe even all of the above... Huh? What? There are REAL bikers here? Where? I stop and look around... and the only patches I can see is a little ol' grandpa and grandma biker couple in front of me wearing... get this... H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) ! Oh ya, mothers hide your daughters cuz the H.O.G. riders are out tonight! Hahahhaha. No offense to any H.O.G. riders, I love ya'll Allright. For those of you that thought that the above was funny, you may or may not want to go to Daytona next year. If you do, plan on bringing your own friends for fun and just hanging out. Enjoy the bands and check out the awesome bikes, buy yourself some $5 hamburgers, have a few beers watch the weekend bikers shop and have fun. For those of you that didn't understand what the hell was so funny, your really should go to Daytona, your gonna love it.
